Fall Registration vs. Application to Graphic Design

Some Additional information you should be aware of relating to applying to the graphic design major at the end of this semester:

On the current application form, it has ART 1040 listed as a class. HOWEVER,
ART 1040 is no longer offered. ART 1050 is the correct prerequisite. The handout is indeed out of date.

Is AH 2000 an option for the other art history requirement?
Students are required to take two of the following three classes to apply to the graphic design major: AH 1700, 1750 and 1850. They'll need a waiver to get AH2000 to count in our program.

How do students register for classes for next fall? What do students normally do that are applying to the graphic design program?
Students don't need to worry about getting crowded out of our junior design major classes, since no one can register for those until we let them. The graphic design department will give Adam Wagner a list of names of those who are selected for the program after the review takes place and students have been notified. ALL applicants should assume they are not getting into the major and register for whatever their "Plan B" is. If they get in the major they can drop/add in May. This way students will at least have their classes set up in advance.

Post Midterm Grades

Post Midterm grades have been sent out to you today. I waited until after the stationery projects to send these out so you could have more than 1 or 2 grades for the average.
This is a "working average" meaning that it is only a guesstimate of where you currently are...you still have 3 more projects so anything can happen. Pour on the creative steam and let yourself become more involved in the design process. Each of you have a terrific logo and now is the time to demonstrate how you creatively apply that logo to a larger branding and campaign strategy. Be clever. Be authentic and most of all let the work demonstrate your own sense of style and artistic voice.

Stationery Critique Part 1

Some images from the Stationery Critique (Part 1) that I wanted to share with you.

Thanks Jon!

Thanks to Jon Hart who visited class to share his "Sophomore Review" portfolio of work to those of you who might be applying to major in graphic design. I think Jon had one of the best sophomore portfolios I've seen in a long time. His work continues to grow and be even more successful as he moves into his Senior year in the program. Thanks Jon for taking out time to share your work and experiences with this great group of designers. Hope this helped each of you regarding the Sophomore Review.

(Could be a paper company, printing company, University, Green Organization, etc.)
You should also think about a "headline" for the poster or it can all be typographical.

Logo Design, Stationery Design, Advertisement Design, Specialty Design and Earth Day Poster Design. Please put anything else you wish in this CD/DVD for consideration in final grading. Also, All Blogs should be completed by end of this day for grade as well.

This is what Portfolio Review Looks Like

Big Shout Out to Jon Hart who visited the class last night to go through his sophomore portfolio of work just for you. It's always great to see and hear another student mentoring another set of designers. Jon has some wonderful work if you want to visit his blog at www.jonmhart.blogspot.com. Thanks Jon for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit and go through some of the critique.

Here are some photos I took from last year when everyone had finished turning in their portfolios for review. There were 46 portfolios and you can see how they appeared prior to the Instructors coming in to go through the work. Again, do your best, that's all anyone wants you to do.

Think about this as you prepare your work:
Keep it simple and clean presentation from start to finish regarding how you present your work.
Like Jon said perhaps go from your logo in a progression throughout all your classes.
I would start off with your logo or a specially designed page for the event.

Design really is nothing more than problem-solving, Improvising, being resourceful and finally enjoying what you do.It all comes through. You should also be kind to your fellow classmates as you speak of them. You never know perhaps one day you'll be interviewing for a job at a place you really want to work and there is the person you
might have spoken badly about in your class so many years earlier. They might forgive you but they seldom forget. Choose what you have to say about your fellow classmates wisely. The Design world is small and it's a very interconnected discipline so don't burn your bridges.

Melanie Bostwick: Ads for Client

Senior Melanie Bostwick created these very creative and suggestive ADs for her client "EATS" that were in line with her entire campaign for this down & dirty neighborhood eatery on Ponce. Thanks Melanie!

Tes Swygert: ADs for His Client

Senior Tres Swygert loves to Illustrate and these are his ADs for his client that are true to his love for drawing and writing copy. Thanks Tres!

How many are there of you?

Of course there is only one YOU but how many others have your name?

Everything is Advertising

This illustration depicts what you can possibly do with an ad the scale of 3"X11" vertical or horizontal. It doesn't have any type or logo but it allows space in the illustration to place such easily.

When you are designing your ADs for your client, remember that the client is "king" and that you want to stay on message...you also want to be fresh with your idea and imagery. Do you play into the past history of the client or do you update and modernize the client? The client (in the real world) is paying you for a service to develop new ways to attract attention and a clientele. Why would you use Black and White? Why wouldn't you use Black and White? Think about it before you start designing.
Also, as you design, think about where you will put copy and logo. Don't let it be happenstance or accident when you decide to put the type or text into your Ad.
